Bio
Michael Lainchbury is a ceramic artist born and based in Sussex. His work is closely connected to the surrounding landscape, particularly the rolling chalk hills of the South Downs, the white cliffs along the coast and the ever-changing sea.
Working primarily by hand, Michael creates sculptural ceramic forms, exploring shape, texture and surface effects. His current practice focuses on hand-built closed forms, allowing each piece to develop intuitively in response to the qualities of the clay.
Inspired by the chalk downs and flint seams found throughout the Sussex landscape, his work reflects the contrast between soft chalk, rugged flint and weathered surfaces shaped by wind and sea. These natural elements influence both the forms and textures of his ceramics.
Michael works with conventional firing methods alongside experimental techniques, including raku and smoke firing. These processes create distinctive variations in colour, pattern and texture, introducing an element of unpredictability that makes each piece unique.
Through his work, Michael explores the possibilities of clay and firing, creating sculptural pieces that reflect his connection to the Sussex landscape and the natural materials that inspire him.
