Exploring the Art World with a Passionate Artist

Mark Charlton

Bio

Mark Charlton is a mixed media artist who originally worked within the animation and design industry before developing a career in fine art. Born in Margate in 1976, he now lives and works in Shoreham by Sea in the United Kingdom.

His work is informed by nature, science, the passage of time and the idea that everything is connected. Using abstraction and elements of minimalism, he builds compositions on wood panels through an organic process of discovery rather than detailed pre planning. Many of his works are mixed media pieces on solid wood panel that combine paper, paint, glue and other materials such as cement, graphite and wax, developed through repeated layering and weathering of the surface.

Each piece is treated as an individual object with a strong physical presence, reminiscent of an unearthed fragment. Through the gradual build up and erosion of layers he looks for a point of stillness in the work, allowing unplanned marks and traces of decay to settle into a final balance that invites contemplation and reflection.

Mark has presented solo exhibitions including Walking Through at The Art Office in London, shows at Arundel Contemporary Gallery in Arundel, Summer Spotlight at Tom Cox Gallery in London, Faint Echo at Gallery 40 in Brighton, The Last Star Shine at The Last Supper Gallery in London and INT50 at The Observatory in Hailsham. His work has also featured in group exhibitions such as Circle at Whistleblower Gallery in Brighton, M2, Pecche Melange, Oxygen and Raw at Tom Cox Gallery in London, and at London Art Fair with Liberty Gallery.
